Modern SEO Strategies Every Online Business Owner Should Practice

With nearly every business realizing that they need to be on the web, gaining high online visibility has never been harder. Over the last two years, SEO has changed dramatically with the rise of social media and mobile browsing, and sites that aren’t trying to stay ahead of current SEO trends will surely find themselves with a non-ranking site. However, there are a few modern SEO practices that every site owner should utilize if they want to have a successful site:

Think Local

Google local completely dominates the top results pages. If your website is also tied to a storefront, then you need to make sure that your address is going to register on Google Places. In addition to making sure that your address is correct, you also need to make sure that you are listed under categories that match your products and services so that when someone types in “lawyer” or “coffee” your business pops up.

Be Sociable

Having a website for your business is incredibly important, but so is also having a Twitter account and Facebook page. If you are serious about your website’s online visibility, then you need to have it linked to social media, as these types of sites are becoming the go to places for online researchers.

Do You Want Repeat Customers? It is Not Always the Service

In running a business, there is nothing more exhilarating and satisfying than having repeat customers. I envy those businesses that have an undeniable charisma on people. Let us take this Italian restaurant in downtown New Jersey as an example, the one that isn’t anything special, and the one with faux Italian typefaces with a fat, mustached-mascot drawn on its signage. I can’t mention its exact business name because the owner might read this, which will definitely create a problem. Anyway, before we stray from the matter at hand, let us go back. Okay, it’s just an ordinary Italian place that serves fine, ordinary pasta dishes, pizza, and Buffalo wings. However, I challenge you to hang out there for one straight week and spend some time memorizing the customers’ face. I bet that on your seventh day, you will notice that they have a good set of loyal customers. Same face, same group, same countenance—they are the restaurant’s repeat customers.

I wonder how I can do that to my SEO Reselling business.

To be frank with you, I know that I’m pretty average in comparison with the other SEO Resellers out there who were able to attend public speaking and oral communications training.

JC Penney gets busted for bad seo

If you follow the news, then you know about the crap that JC Penney is currently going through. I find this entire episode a little comical. Why? Because Google didn’t really care what this high-paying pay per click customer was up to until the New York Times stuck their nose into the mix.

And now JC Penney will get a huge slap and everybody will buzz about black hat SEO for a while. But will things really change? I doubt it. Google is king and nobody is pushing them off the high-horse any time soon.

Affordable SEO Professionals And What To Consider

Many small businesspeople are initially a bit dismayed by the high prices that many SEO professionals can charge for their services. However, there are many affordable SEO resellers out there who can do a perfectly wonderful job at boosting your search engine rankings. That said, always do your research in advance to make sure that your affordable SEO professional of choice turns out to be a true bargain, rather than a disappointing rip off.

Once you decide on what exactly constitutes an affordable SEO budget for your business, start your quest for a reputable professional who can help you out for the price you can afford. Shop around online, and make sure that any affordable SEO professional you consider is not only impeccably ethical in their methodology, but also has a solid record of measurable results from their previous clients, as well. Once you have found an ethical and affordable SEO professional with a record of measurable results, make sure that their online record matches their marketing magic.

To verify the reliability or legitimacy of any affordable SEO professional you consider, a simple web search for the name of the individual or company in question should turn up at least a few previous client reviews, both good and bad.

Bring Attention to Your Blog and Make the Most of It

With the introduction of social sharing tools on Toolbox.com, you have the power to reach millions of individuals worldwide and direct them to your blog. Sounds great, right? The question is: How are you going to use this attention to grow your blog? Here are a few tips:

  • Send consistent messaging about your blog entries through social networks and sites (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumblUpon, etc). This includes the formatting of your messages (i.e. dashes, commas, capitalization, hash tags, etc.), the voice of your messages (first, second, or third-person), and the style of your messages (humorous, serious, political, etc.).
  • Use key terms. Include words like “Finance, HR, or IT” when sharing your blog entries with others. This will increase the SEO value of your blog. The stronger your SEO, the larger your blog audience will become.
  • Include the link to your blog. As simple as it may seem, sometimes people forget or delete the link to their blog, only including the blog title. Make sure to include your blog’s link so that users can go directly to your blog!
  • Remember your audience. What value does your message convey to readers? Are you providing them an angle to frame the context of your blog? Why should they read your entry?

Top 10 SEO Tips for Public Relations

Today at the PRSA 09 conference, it was a packed room for TopRank CEO (and author of Online Marketing Blog) Lee Odden who gave a presentation on SEO for Public Relations.

He started by explaining why SEO is/should be important to PR Professionals.

In a 2008 Journalists Use of Search Survey by TopRank, we discovered that 91% of journalists use standard search to fulfill a component of their job whether researching a story or locating a subject matter expert.

With journalists writing for more channels and with less resources making your content visible within search is critical.

Here are Odden’s 10 SEO Tips:

1. Number one thing to do?
Magic answer is that it depends on the problem.
However, if you choose one item to tackle make sure your website is crawlable. If the site isn’t crawlable, then really nothing else you do in terms of SEO will matter.

2. Understand and Optimize PR Tactics
The content that is likely already being created as part of the PR campaign is low hanging fruit in terms of SEO.

Optimize the following content with keyword phrases (or those terms that journalists might be searching) to help your content become more visible:

* Press Releases
* Letters to the editor
* Online Newsroom
* Media kits
* Corporate blogs
* White papers
* Webinars/demos
* Newsletters
* Real world interviews published digitally

In addition, Odden introduces the audience to the idea of Micromedia Optimization.

Don’t write articles only for SEO purposes

I don’t mean to say you write articles only for SEO purposes: write articles to share knowledge. SEO is a just a beneficial by-product. Every website needs inbound links because search engines use the number of “valid” inbound links to evaluate your website and rank it accordingly. It is not the only factor but it is an important factor.
When people directly link to your website you cannot control what anchor text the other webmasters use. You can request them to change it but it is not practical to track every incoming link and then ask the webmaster to use the right anchor text. The best way is, submit articles that already have the right anchor text in the links.
Meaningless articles filled with loads of keywords are a strict no-no if you want your  article marketing campaign to be effective.
Often you will find publishers of article  directory sites rejecting them outright.  While SEO is an important goal for any  business owner to direct traffic to the site, it shouldn’t be the only goal of article marketing. The main focus should be on
imparting useful knowledge, ideas and practical tips that readers can use.
Only then will the publisher feel the article is of worth.

Independent businesses are vital to our local economies. They ensure the unique character of an area, are more accountable to customers and the local community, more likely to support local charities, and have greater direct control over the environmental impact of their businesses.

Money spent at locally owned independent businesses goes around longer in the local economy. It yields two to four times the economic benefit to the local residents compared with non-local businesses. This means more local income, wealth, and jobs.
