For a lot of people the title of salesman makes people think about door to door salesmen or telesales people who have the most incredible gift of knowing exactly when you’re about to take your first bit of dinner.

The true salesman or woman is nothing like this, true sales involves a great talent of installing faith, faith in you, what your selling and your brand and with the choice provided by the internet today this job is getting harder and harder.

So just how do you get that yes in sales?

First Contact

The cold approach is the worst part of sales so make sure that approach is never stone cold. The internet may hinder a lot of sales people today (anyone can find anything they want at any price they want online) but the internet is also a great tool. Follow the person you want to sell to on Twitter, add them to your contacts on LinkedIn, leave a comment on their blog, whatever media you’re going to use just make sure it’s you who’s approaching them and not a corporate account – let them see that sales people are people too. Now you can make that first contact, now they’ve already seen your name let them know who you are and what you’re offering. Do not try to sell them anything with the first communication it’s just an introduction.

Following It Up

Now you’ve got to make direct contact. Watch any true sales person make that first call and they’ll be sat up tall or even stood up, they’ll have a smile on their face and they’ll look relaxed. Of course the person on the phone can’t see all this but it comes across through their voice. Like the first contact you still don’t want to sell them anything yet, the only goal of this phone call is to get a meeting, either go to their offices or take them for a drink, there’s no pressure through this contact to get the sale. Be friendly and polite, you really feel your product or service could really benefit them. Don’t keep it vague; give examples that are specific to their business and even their role within the business if you can – let them see you’ve done your homework.

Getting That Meeting

When you walk into that meeting, be realistic, the chances are you’re not going to get a sale. The chances are they’ll say they’re not looking for your product or service today but maybe in the future. The first thing you need to do is get this person to trust you, don’t waffle on about your business, they’re buying your products/services not your business, once you’ve given them an introduction move on. Talk to them about their business and find a way your products/services could fit in with their business. Even if you walk away with that ‘no’ you haven’t wasted your time because you’ve gathered valuable data that could be used in the future.

Stay Strong

You’ll very rarely get an outright no, if you don’t get the sale you need to find the reason why. In most cases it’s going to come down to price and again this needs to be examined further, if they claim you’re too expensive you need to ask what they feel a reasonable price would be and where they got that ‘reasonable price’ from – have they had another quote? Are you offering something the other quote isn’t that justifies your higher price? If they’re just after the cheapest product/service they’re not going to be a good client, they need to care about quality too. The other common reason you’re turned down will be because they already have a supplier they’re happy with in which case you need to find out why they chose that supplier in the first place. If it was because they feel their current supplier offers the best service at the best price try winning a smaller contract or a trial basis so you can prove you have the best service at the best price.

Working in a sales office can be tough so take some of the pressure off with telephone answering services and virtual offices.

The web is the fastest growing part of the private sector and many companies are switching up their approach to do more of their business online. This is for many reasons due to the increase in exposure to a larger market that needs very little infrastructure costs.

Online sales and services are a great addition to any business model, and even if you’re a blog or organization, this is the most effective way to get the word out. But it’s important to realize that it takes far more than just starting a site and hoping that everything will work itself out. Though it’s more cost effective to use web services, there are still resources that you need to be using in order to ensure the success of your online venture:

Reputation management

Reputation management for many people is a largely unfamiliar term and leads many to ask, “What is Reputation Management?” What you might not realize is that many businesses already use these services as a way to increase their online profile and control the way consumers and clients see them.

The web is a large place and many people have a lot to say about your site or service. Online Reputation Management is a way you can improve the quality of information circulating on the web and suppress bad press that you’ve received. It puts the success of a site in the hands of the owner and allows businesses a fighting chance to get in touch with the people who want their services. In the course of doing business, there might be competitors or disgruntled employees and clients that want to tarnish your reputation. Reputation management is a way to control this and improve your image while increasing your online profile.

Social Media

Social media is the new front in advertising and consumer interaction. The large majority of society has gone increasingly social and wants newer ways to interact with friends, family, and business. Sites like Facebook and Twitter allow anyone, including companies, to link into a network of users without ever spending a dime.

There are dozens of sites you can name, but in order to use social media to its greatest affect, you should be looking at a concentrated and diverse approach to increasing your social standing through using social platforms like blogging, forums, and other social sites. Though many sites have already done so, most have yet to take social media seriously. This is a big mistake as social media gives you a way to link back to your site and other services, and not only increase your online profile, but the sales of your products or services.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization is all about helping sites increase their search ranking. If you’re not familiar with SEO services, then you should know that most of your competitors are probably using these services. The whole idea is pretty simple because most people, when conducting a search, don’t go past the first page or even the first few hits. This makes it incredibly difficult for businesses or sites, if they’re not using SEO, to get any attention. SEO services work to increase the number of links that take visitors back to your site and this increases your overall search ranking. So when people type in a key phrase, you’re site is more likely to appear higher in the search.

These key services are resources that any site that wants to be successful should be taking. It’s hard enough to stand out in an online market that flooded with competition and misinformation. You should be doing everything you can to improve the quality and visibility of your site. Use these services to help out your chances of getting in touch with the people who are most interested in what your site has to offer.

Social media is often regarded as the precious silver bullet by local, small businesses, and it may well be so with all the hype surrounding it. But what most entrepreneurs do not stop to think is how they can make use of social media to their fullest advantage. Some people think that the best thing they can get out of Facebook is getting people to like their page and be included in a few members’ statuses every now and then. But there is so much more than that.
First thing is first, entrepreneurs need to stop thinking that they can entrust the entire bulk of their marketing strategy to Facebook. Instead, Facebook should only be used to complement the existing marketing strategies which you have already employed. There are three simple moves that small businesses can try on Facebook.

Groups

Using ‘groups’ on Facebook is the best way to segment your friends on Facebook. Sometimes, a Facebook account, even if it is dedicated to your business, can have different kinds of friends. In order for you to send appropriate content to each person, it is wise to group these friends into different categories including clients, partners, suppliers and prospects. This way, you can post special content for your existing customers like that regarding your loyalty program and then post another enticing offer for those who have yet to buy something from your store.

Like

This is probably the most popular feature in Facebook. People judge the worthiness of their posts by the number of likes that they receive. Because businesses often need feedback from their customers too, likes have become just as important to entrepreneurs too. To find out if your company blog posts and website content are appealing to your visitors or not, the Like button should be added. Best of all, when a random visitor ‘likes’ your blog post, he or she is advertising this post to his or her friends and providing them a link to your site.

Send

The Send button is the same as the Like button but the user is given the option to choose who among their friends they would like to share their action with. This allows you to share information only to those who you think would be most interested, leaving out those who would not. With the help of the Send button, you can do targeted advertising and other kinds of marketing campaigns.

When running a small business, it is important to keep your expenses at a minimum. This can sometimes be difficult, depending on the type of business, as we get into the usual routine of purchasing, staffing, and more. By actively pursuing options to cut back on costs, you will discover that you have more money to help grow and expand your business.

Follow these tips to help you save money for your business.

A) Don’t Waste Time

This one is pretty simple, but commonly overlooked. Companies often lose a lot of money simply because they are wasting time. This particularly includes staffing and utilities. Having hourly paid employees slacking on their work, or running out of work to do, could cost a lot of money each year. While laying off hourly staff members just to save money is never a good idea for a small business, instead let them go home early if there is no more work to do.

Also make sure when your business closes for the day that all the lights are turned off and the thermostat is set at room temperature. The most costs for small businesses rack up when nobody is in, and those can be minimized by routinely checking the lights and thermostat.

B) Utilize New Media

The great part about owning a small business now is that it’s easier than ever to promote your business for very little, if anything at all. Using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, or even maintaining a blog, will promote your business just as, if not more, effectively to your desired audience.

In addition, social networking has allowed for consumers to connect directly with businesses. This stimulates discussion and a closer relationship with the business, driving up interest in your business.

C) Vending Machines

If your business has several employees or a lot of customer foot traffic, you can increase your cash flow by working with a vending machine business. While it will have some initial costs to install and deliver, you will soon discover more cash flow simply from the purchase of snacks or beverages.

D) Ask for Discounts

Few business owners realize the discount potential they could have simply by asking when they go out shopping. While discounts are less likely to happen when buying a few small items, buying office equipment can cost a lot less simply by asking. It may feel awkward, but taking the initiative to ask could save a lot of money. You could even pay wholesale price rather than retail. It never hurts to ask.

E) Interns

If your business is in need of some extra help, interns are always a great idea. Many colleges and universities offer programs for their students to place them in supervised roles in the professional world. Not a lot of businesses pay their interns, but still provide them with insight and experience necessary to be successful in the real world.

As demonstrated, there are plenty of opportunities for your business to save a little money here and there, which will benefit you in the long run. Remember to always keep a critical eye of your daily operations and soon you will see much greater success for your business.

As a website designer, it is your job to walk the tightrope between what a client wants and what a user needs. Your client list is going to provide you with a diverse and often challenging list of demands to fulfill. Every client will want something different for the website that serves as an online extension of their business; sometimes they will have specific ideas ready for you, but mostly they will only have a vague notion of what they want. It is your job to create a design that will represent their brand effectively (in keeping with their mission, attitude, aesthetic, and products or services) and speak to their demographic, but you also need the ability to steer them in the right direction (without getting fired for disagreeing with their “vision”). But there is an even more important aspect to web design that has little to do with the client. You must be able to consistently create sites that users can, well, USE. So no matter how the client wants to tart up their web-space, you must first and foremost make it user-friendly.

If you’re lucky, you’ll end up with clients that are willing to defer to your expertise and let you do your job as you see fit (on their behalf). Ha! Fat chance! These people are expending a portion of their advertising or development budget on your services, and they want their money’s worth! This means they will approach you with all kinds of crazy ideas about how the design should progress. Most of what you are handed will be junk and it will be your laborious task to sift and narrow until you discover the core of what makes their company unique. This you can use. But first, you need to focus on the framework.

Some clients will want a store, others will want a blog, and many will require information-gathering software. All of this falls under the category of particulars. You need to start with the basic layout and navigation of the site, and this will be targeted at the user, not the client for whom you are creating the site. This is probably the most important aspect of your work because it will be largely responsible for the user experience. How many times have you gone to a website and been unable to locate the navigation tabs, forcing you to search the page from top to bottom? Have you ever clicked a link only to find it broken? And how many times do you return to these ill-conceived sites? Well, there you go. Getting the basic framework for the site in place is the most essential step in designing a site that will suit the needs of your client; if guests can’t find their way around, they won’t return.

Once you have created this user-friendly framework, you can start the arduous chore of pandering to your client. Just remember that you are being paid to create a website that represents your client’s brand and helps to expand their business. So regardless of what they ask for, you need to strive to deliver what they actually need (and convince them along the way).

Whether talking about blogs or social media, there is no shortage of mentioning the Cloud and all the elements which go into it. There is however a valid point being made about the use of confusing jargon surrounding the issue. In order to sound smart and up to date about the technology which has been created, everyone is trying to use the latest buzzwords without a single mention as to what the buzzwords can possible mean. It creates an environment in which less people are willing to read blogs by those which make them feel as if they are unintelligent.

The cloud is one of the technologies which have been created lately which is revolutionizing the way people use computers and store information. It is important to make sure that those using it can be more productive and accomplish tasks which used to be either impossible or would take so long to accomplish no one had the time to go through the process of completing them. As a blogger or creator of a social media site (or both) it is your responsibility to help in the education of the masses through a few well-placed informative pieces here and there.

For instance, when talking about document scanning, rather than talking about the different technical aspects of it, take a second to explain the manner in which the scanning of documents can help to be more productive by not having to search out the documents in a filing cabinet. You may also want to explain some of the elements which go into scanning a document rather than assuming that everyone knows how to go about scanning documents and integrating the information into document management software. Giving a little explanation about document software will go a long way to creating an environment where people are better prepared to use the technology.

Of course, the flip side to this is not to dumb down what you are saying in your blog or social media posts that you lose the attention of those who understand what you are saying already. Use of jargon is a great way to get your point across without having to delve into speaking about what the terms actually mean. A great way to retain their attention, while informing the rest of the public, is to consider using a brief explanation of terms which use certain jargon more than just a few times.

The most important part is to make sure that the information being represented does not detract from the overall promotion of the cloud. Make sure that the public is being given every opportunity they can get to use the cloud for everyday tasks. After all, the cloud was created in order to help out everyone and not just businesses to get more done every day. By using the jargon and providing a few explanations, you can help to make everyone feel as if they are on the same page. There will also be more use of the cloud.
