Functions of Management

A business that is run smoothly is a great business that achieves its goals. Whether it may be new or old, large or small, each successful business uses their own managerial concepts to run their organization. There are basically four management concepts that allow any organization to handle the tactical, planned and set decisions (Pakhare, 2010). The four functions of management include planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These functions of management allow for managers to handle the strategic, tactical and operational decisions for their company.

The first and most important of four functions of management is planning. Planning is the foundation of management and what the other functions of management build upon. Planning requires management to evaluate where the company is currently, and where it would like to be in the future (Rane, 2007). This is when goals and objectives are made, along with a course of action. This is an unending process because of the sudden changes that arise in each company. Depending on the conditions, a company many have to alter its course of action in accomplishing certain goals (Pahare, 2010). This is also known as strategic planning.  During strategic planning it is important for managers to figure out their company’s strengths, weaknesses, and action plan for accomplishing goals.

The second function of management is getting organized.  Organization is necessary for every company to have order in their planning process. Management must organize all its resources well before in hand to put into practice the course of action to decide that had been planned in the base function (Pakhare, 2010). Organizing the company as well as the people and resources in it is a very important job for a manager. Without an organized workplace, employees will see a manager as unprepared and may lose respect for that particular manager’s supervisory techniques (Rothbauer-Wanish, 2009). Another job for managers is to organize the work load and distribute it out to each of the employees in the company.

Managers should not only manage their employees, they need to learn to be leaders. Managers who want to lead effectively need to discover what motivates their employees and inspire them to reach the company objectives (Rothbauer-Wanish, 2009). Highly motivated employees play an essential role in the company achieving its goals because they go above and beyond in their job performances. This is why managers should put a lot of focus on motivating their employees. Managers should come up with a reward program based on job performance based on the employees’ needs. Communication can also help managers become successful leaders in their company. Understanding the communication process and working on areas that need improvement, help managers to become more effective communicators (Pakhare, 2010).

The last function of management is control. This is when managers establish performance standards based on the company’s objectives and also evaluating and reporting of the employees actual job performances.  Once management has done both of these things, it should compare the two to determine any necessary corrective or preventive action (Rane, 2007). Managers should always directly address the problems that arise instead of lowering standards to solve problems.  Management should identify any potential problems and take the necessary precautions through controlling.  This helps managers take any preventive measures against the consequences and recognize any further developing problems that need correction. Effective and efficient management leads to success, the success where it attains the objectives and goals of the organizations (Pakhare, 2010).

Being a manager involves many different tasks. Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are all responsibilities of manager’s everyday task. These four functions of management must be followed to become a successful manager that run a smooth business. Balancing different components, keeping employees inspired, having strategic planning, being in control, and very organized are all aspects of a great manager.
