CBS Poll: More Americans Unhappy at Work
January 5th, 2010 No big surprise here. The CBS poll showed that only 45% of the workforce was satisfied with their jobs.In previous years there were many studies that discussed how bad it can be surviving a layoff as you are now doing all of the work those who are gone were responsible for. There is no extra pay and you are told you should be happy to even have a job. There is also chronic underemployment, that is, people who are taking any work they can get even though they are overqualified. All this does not add up to a happy employment environment. The Conference Board who does this study annually, found that job satisfaction was at the lowest level they have ever recorded in their twenty-two years of surveys. Read CBS article here.
At the University of North Florida Small Business Development Center, we view this as yet another reason why so many people are starting businesses and coming in to our offices to seek technical assistance. It is not just people who are out of work who are starting new businesses, but also people who are either frustrated by their present job or want to have something going to “hedge their bet” should they be caught in the next round of layoffs.
