SBA Applauds Treasury Action to Bolster Secondary Market for Small Business Loans

More on the SBA Loan issue. An SBA press release yesterday announced that the Treasury and Federal Reserve has taken steps to make pooled SBA loans more attractive to investors. The result will likely mean banks that were out of SBA lending will get back in. Numbers are Down on Entrepreneurial Activity: Trend or Time Out?

In a post-election survey sponsored by the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council), respondents were not overly optimistic about the outlook for entrepreneurship and the U.S. economy. However, given the fragile state of the economy it wasn’t total doom and gloom.When we asked participants (800 actual voters) this question: In thinking about entrepreneurship and the future of the U.S. economy, what best describes your outlook for American small business ownership?….the responses were as follows:33 percent felt that the American Dream of starting and growing a successful small business is alive and well.55 percent felt that the American Dream of starting and growing a successful small business is on life support.8 percent felt that the American Dream of staring and growing a successful small business is dead.

What NOT To Do on the Economy, Courtesy of the UK

As I paged through The Wall Street Journal this morning, I came across a headline declaring, “U.K. to Cut Taxes, Speed Spending in Stimulus Plan.”Well, I thought, maybe the Brits got it half right. Unfortunately, even half right was not the case.The Journal reported:The British government will boost spending and slash taxes in a £20 billion ($29.73 billion) stimulus package announced Monday, an effort to cushion the impact of what is shaping up to be a deep recession.In a speech to present his budget plans for the coming year, Treasury chief Alistair Darling laid out measures including a yearlong cut in value-added tax to 15% from 17.5%, an extension of tax breaks for low-wage workers, the acceleration of £3 billion in spending on infrastructure projects, and debt guarantees for small businesses.To help pay for the stimulus, he said, the government will raise the top income-tax rate to 45% from 40% after the next election, which must be called by the summer of 2010.

My niece, Sarah, and her third grade classmates sang a song from the Broadway show, “Rent.” The song breaks down how many minutes are in a year and asks us how many ways we count a year. It’s catchy. I’ve been humming the song all day, but I don’t remember how many minutes it turned out to be.Measuring is important. Figuring out what to measure is even more important.
